CHEMICAL

SAFETY

USE ONLY CHEMICALS REQUIRED FOR A PARTICULAR PROCESS. DO NOT

SUBSTITUTE.

IDENTIFY CHEMICAL BEFORE USE.

REVIEW AND UNDERSTAND HAZARDS BEFORE USING A CHEMICAL (MSDS).

WEAR PROPER EYE PROTECTION.

FOLLOW PROPER WORKPLACE PROCEDURES.

MAINTAIN AND USE REQUIRED SAFETY EQUIPMENT.

FOOD, BEVERAGES, AND TOBACCO ARE NOT TO BE BROUGHT INTO CHEMICAL USE

AREAS.

MAINTAIN AND USE ADEQUATE PERSONAL DECONTAMINATION EQUIPMENT.

KEEP WORKPLACE NEAT.

DEVELOP AN ATTITUDE OF SAFETY AWARENESS.

Notes I would suggest

1. Ask questions about any part of the lab which you might not understand. Don't go blindly into the experiment!

2.  Listen carefully for any changes in the instructions.

3.  Please don't ask me what color something is, it is your responsibility to know the color, and your eyes are better than mine.

4.  Describe any equipment or glassware you are using so that you could identify it outside of lab.

5.  Show all work in deriving your answers.

6.  Be very cautious about heating something. Start gently and progress from there.

7.  When heating something, one person needs to watch the temperature on the thermometer, and another person should apply the heat.

8.  After you use a pipette throw it away. Never return chemicals to their original containers.

9.  Always ask me about how to dispose of leftover materials.

10.  Be sure to clean up around your workstation and place equipment back in its original location. Ask me about locations.

KNOW THE CHEMICALS YOU USE !

Americans with Disabilities Act: Valdosta State University complies fully with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you believe you are covered under this act, and if you have need for special arrangements to allow you to meet the requirements of this course, please contact the personnel at the VSU center at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. These individuals will put you in contact with VSU’ Special Services Office. Please discuss any issues with the instructor on the first night of class.

Wednesday, August 10, 2011 LAB on Density

Density Calculations

Directions will be handed out at first meeting

Student will find the density of three (3) solid cubes by finding the volume and mass. Then, the student will find the density of a cylinder by physical measurement and water displacement to get the volume. Compare the two methods. Next, the student will determine the density of two liquids using the balance and graduated cylinder.

Wednesday, August 17, 2011 LAB on reactions

The student will react 16 chemical chemical compounds with each other. The student is to look for signs of a chemical reaction in each. The observations should include precipitate formation, evolution of a gas, drastic color change (not from dilution), and evolution of heat or light. Record each observation in your notebook. Where there is no apparent reaction, enter NR.

Wednesday, August 24, 2011  EXAM 1

The student will examine three reactions and stoichiometrically determine the products and decide which of the reactants was excessive and which one was the limiting reactant

Wednesday, August 31, 2011 - Lab on more reactions

The student will react 16 chemical compounds with each other and predict the products. The student will then write balanced equations for the reactions.
